KAYAK ADVENTURES
Dads work commitments and Cyclone Debbie limited fishing opportunities during late March and early April. But we were able to explore some new grounds with the addition of the Viking Profish GT. It's a great kayak capable of fishing skinny creeks and open water. We planned a few afternoon sessions in waterways less affected by the relentless SE winds and while the fishing was hit and miss, just being able to explore the waterways was great fun. We mainly targeted Barramundi, with all the recent rain flushing the rivers clean and filling Lenthalls Dam so that water was flowing over the wall, along with some fish. We explored areas above and below the dam armed with depth sounders on both the kayaks, finding some interesting structure, pockets of warm and cool water but a lack of fish. We eventually found a few Barra, with Dad landing the best fish of ~65cm. That fish was a reward for a ~10km round trip that afternoon, and since we had our last cast ~20mins before sunset, there was 5km to paddle back to the ute with 40mins until dark. We put headlamps on anticipating an after dark arrival but surprised ourselves by making it back without using them. My arms were feeling it and I was a relieved to spot our launch site but really enjoyed that trip. Overall, we explored some new areas and have a few more trips planned this month, weather permitting.
