FIRST BASS

Today we opted for a change of scenery, targeting a new species for us, the mighty Bass. We had heard that Bass were great fighters for their size but had never had the opportunity to fish for them, until now. As usual an early morning start, and an hours drive to the freshwater. The drive and dirt boatramp reminded us of Top End fishing, where I learnt to fish and have many great memories. Once on the water, we tried some surface lures before the wind got up, for a few hits but no hookups. Throughout the day, we trialled spinnerbaits and vibes around weedbanks and drop offs to land our first few Bass. They put up a great fight on the light gear as we expected. With the heatwave and 32 degree surface water temperature, we figured some Bass might be in the deeper cooler water, and we found a few throughout the day both casting and trolling. The strong Northerlies restricted us to protected areas in the afternoon and we finished the day by landing our final fish trolling as the sun set. A great day on the water with our Bass PB set at 40cm, a target we are keen to beat in the near future.
