TUNA TOWN

When we arrived at the boat ramp we saw the jetboats that are visiting Hervey Bay for tomorrows race. We spent some time checking out the awesome machines, and launched near a mini jet boat with 2 of our 150hp Mercs on the back. Imagine how quickly we could get to Rooneys with that many horses!

The stronger than excepted winds kept us within 10km of the marina. We were hoping the SE winds had schooled up some bait balls near Big Woody Island and were pumped to see birds working this area. While launching we were told of some decent Tuna Schools in the area so it was just a matter of finding them. In the lumpy conditions the tuna were smashing bait up against a sandbar, giving us some shelter from the swell. Within a few casts we were hooked up to a 1m+ Mac Tuna, but it got off when it swam full speed towards the boat. Before we knew it we were on to another 1m+ Mac Tuna and this time we stayed connected for about 10 minutes. It put up a huge fight, with Dad driving the boat toward the fish and the fish still taking line. Eventually the line snapped but on closer inspection, the frayed leader meant it was sharked. The next school we found were mostly small fish with a few big bust ups but we could only land the Bonito. Shortly after we were back to the Mac Tuna with the schools getting larger and larger. We landed a few fish then dad was hooked up and got sharked. A great session, 5 Mac Tuna landed and released, and another 5 lost.
